POST OPERATIVE CARE INFORMATON

Your pet has had a general anaesthetic or sedation today. You should be aware that they may be quite sleepy and feeling a bit disorientated.

• Depending on the stage of your pet’s recovery from the anaesthesia they may or may not feel like eating.

• We advise giving a bland diet tonight, as the anaesthetic your pet has had may cause sickness. Dry biscuits, chicken, rice, white fish or even scrambled eggs are good bland foods, that shouldn’t upset their stomachs. We also advise to give food little and often rather than a big meal all at once.

• Your pet can return to their normal diet the day after the operation.

• Make sure you keep your pet in a warm and quiet environment this evening, to enable them to make a good recovery.

• As a result of the incision for your pets operation they may have stitches. It is essential that your pet is kept quiet and settled until the wound is completely healed. Excessive excitement may cause stitches to burst and as a result your pet may have to under go another general anaesthetic to re stitch the wound. This will be unnecessary risk to your animal and will cost you more money.

• Make sure you keep your dog on a lead during walks until the wound is healed. If you have a cat, keep him/her in until the wound is healed.

• Your pet may be required to come back for post operative checks with your vet.
